Sleeping in a bothy can be a very different experience from sleeping in a tent as most of them have fires and as a result are warmer than a tent. They are used by loads of other walkers so you are very likely to meet others in the bothy. This makes bothies a great place to exchange favorite walks and meet new people. But best of all they're free! Sound like your kinda thing?

Caves can work like nature's bothies except caves are a lot more exciting than a bothy that's falling to bits. Also, away from the entrance, caves stay at roughly the same temperature all-year round (10C) so you know what to expect before you leave. Not convinced? Think about the bragging rights it brings! Wild camping is the complete opposite to a 5 star city centre hotel, no en-suite (actually there's no bathroom at all); no soft, ready made beds and it's usually cold. But hey if you love camping, and like the wilderness then the great experience of wild camping is definitely right up your street. Why not give it a go?
(You're allowed a tent if the picture above confused you by the way.) |
Entertainment Ideas
When you are in the middle of nowhere, in a tent, late at night with no modern entertainment (unless you have a solar charger and good weather) simple games are a good idea so that you don't die of boredom. Simple games such as a game of cards or a travel board game that can be slipped into a space in your rucksack easily and can be set up simply are a great idea to take along with your walking kit.
