Bothying is essentially another form of wild camping. You could call it squatting on the hills I suppose. Basically, a bothy is a building on a hill or mountain that walkers and climbers alike are free to use a shelter on multi-day hikes. Many are abandoned and so are in a bad state. However, the Mountain Bothies Association maintain many of them. Visit their website to find where some of their bothies are.
Be sure to check their website to find out whether the bothy you are thinking about using is undergoing repairs. (Although most repairs are performed during April and May it is important to check throughout the year.) To report your experience of a bothy fill in a report from here. Some bothies have beds but some don't so it is important to take a sleeping bag. |
To sleep in a Bothy you will need the same kit as for Wild Camping just incase it is full or in a really bad state!
